The Emulator Update Extension is a system extension that delivers the latest 68040 DR Emulator (the same as that provided as part of Mac OS 8.1), as well as more-recent bug fixes and enhancements to the core (non-DR) portion of the Emulator.
The single bug that this extension fixes in the core Emulator is necessary for MacsBug╒s new Watch Points mechanism. The bug does not cause any problems during normal operation of the Mac OS, so the extension is only necessary if you're using the Watch Point commands in MacsBug 6.5.4a6 or later. Note that the patches applied to the Emulator are benign when run on a machine without MacsBug, so it may be left installed when you aren't actively using the debugger.
To install, place the extension in the ╥Extensions╙ folder in your system folder, and restart the machine.
MACHINE/OS REQUIREMENTS
The extension requires a Power Macintosh 9500 or newer. This includes all PowerPC machines released since the spring of 1995. It requires Mac OS System 7.5.5 or newer. If the extension determines that the machine or OS is too old, it will not load. At the moment any error condition is reported as a DebugStr, so please have MacsBug installed.
It has not been tested extensively, and has not been used in conjunction with 3rd-party 680x0 emulation technology such as Connectix Speed Doubler. Buyer beware.
CHANGES
- 1.0d4 - When back-patching Mixed Mode, search for the instruction we replace, rather than having a table of known Mixed Mode versions.
- 1.0d3 - Changed the internal implementation to avoid colliding with Newer Technology G3 upgrade card extensions, as well as most Newer PowerPC utilities. Required for MacsBug 6.5.4a6e2.
